Chapple has undertaken two residencies at SymbioticA:

Her initial residency was a period of exploratory research that was exanded upon in the second, longer residency.

The conceptual drive behind Chapple’s work at SymbioticA is a focus on the dynamic, responsive nature of biological materials and on processes of material transformation – ‘from life to device’.

The main project that she developed involved an investigation of the piezoelectric nature of bone with the intention of creating bone audio speakers. She also pursued work on vibrating tissue culture, with the aim of growing bone in patterns generated by the standing wave resonance of media in the tissue culture flask. Other projects included an investigation of the galvanotactic capacities of E-coli bacteria, and experiments with collagen extraction from bovine tendon and rats tails. Her projects were undertaken across a number of labs in the School of Anatomy and Human Biology as well as in collaboration with the OBEL Lab in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, where she worked with Honours student William Wong on the bone speaker project.

Chapple has written about presented this work in a number of contexts, including ‘Sonic Electric Transductions and the Art of Life’ in the BioDifference Conference for BEAP2004.

2004 3 month residency funded through the New Media Arts Board of the Australia Council.

2006 one year residency funded by the artist and the Australia Council New Media Arts SymbioticA Residency in 2005.
