Residencies
SymbioticA is a unique laboratory that can facilitate artists working in biological art. Its physical location within a science department exposes the artist to the culture and practice of science providing a greenhouse for developing new skills and knowledge for its residents. Artists practice lab work and are given training in scientific and technical knowledge related to the area of research the resident wishes to pursue. In the process of learning new techniques in SymbioticA, the world of science is demystified. SymbioticA’s location, within The University of Western Australia also offers artists in residence a wealth of resource equipment, knowledge and expertise. Artists have worked in collaboration with academics and technicians in the biological and social sciences, arts & humanities, engineering and agriculture departments. Past and Present ResidentsSymbioticA has had over 50 residents from countries including Australia, USA, UK, Portugal, Canada, Singapore, Netherlands, Norway, France and Argentina. Residents have been arts practitioners, science fiction writers, art historians, political theorists, geographers and musicians.
